The safety gear lever is the mechanical linkage (lever arm, pull rod, or link assembly) that connects the speed governor rope to the safety gear jaws. When the governor trips, it grips the governor rope, which—through the lever—pulls up the safety gear operating mechanism and drives the wedges or rollers into the guide rail. The lever geometry determines the actuation force and speed. It must be maintained free of paint, corrosion, and obstruction to ensure instantaneous actuation. EN 81-20 requires regular function tests to verify correct lever movement.
