When multiple suspension ropes carry the elevator car and counterweight, slight differences in rope length or elasticity cause unequal tension distribution. A rope tension equaliser — typically a spring-loaded or hydraulic device at the rope termination point — automatically compensates for these differences, ensuring each rope bears an equal share of the total load.
