Roller Guide Shoe: Three Rollers Spring-Loaded, No Lubrication Low Friction Vibration Attenuation, Above 1.5 m/s and Safety Gear Arrest Resistance

Roller guide shoes (roller guides) replace the traditional sliding guide shoe's oil-lubricated metal slider with sets of rollers running on the three working surfaces of the guide rail (two side faces and the rail face). Construction: typically three rollers per guide shoe assembly — two side rollers and one front roller — each mounted on a spring-loaded arm or elastomeric mount that maintains constant contact with the guide rail, absorbing rail misalignment and vibration. Advantages over sliding guides: (1) No lubrication required at the guide shoe (some designs require periodic roller bearing re-greasing only); (2) Much lower friction forces, reducing motor load at high speed; (3) Vibration and noise attenuation from the roller mounts; (4) Better ride quality — absorbs rail joint steps and misalignment. Applications: standard for elevators above approximately 1.5–2.0 m/s rated speed; required for high-speed and premium-quality elevators. EN 81-20 requirements: guide shoes must maintain guidance of the car and counterweight at all times, including during safety gear arrest and buffer impact — roller guides must be designed to resist the lateral forces under these worst-case conditions without roller or mount failure. Maintenance: periodic inspection of roller condition (wear, cracking), spring tension, and bearing condition. Roller replacement is required when flat spots or excessive wear appear.
