Elevator Rail Brackets: Spacing, Structural Loads and EN 81-20 Requirements

Glossary › Rail Bracket

A steel fixing bracket welded or bolted to the hoistway structure that supports guide rails and transfers elevator loads to the building.

Full Definition
Rail brackets (or rail fixings) are the structural interface between the guide rail and the hoistway wall or building steelwork. They are spaced typically 1.5–2.5 m apart along the rail height. Two common configurations exist: cast brackets welded directly to embedded steel plates in concrete walls, and adjustable clip brackets that allow fine alignment during installation. The bracket spacing, weld size, and bolt grades must be calculated based on buffer impact forces, seismic loads (where applicable per EN 81-77), and guide rail stiffness. EN 81-20 §5.7 covers minimum requirements for rail support design.
