The pit channel (also called pit sill channel or base channel) is a horizontal steel section—usually UPN or C-channel—cast into or bolted to the pit floor. It provides a level, rigid mounting surface for buffer seating plates, the lower guide rail bracket, pit ladder fixings, and oil drip tray supports. Proper installation ensures accurate positioning of buffers relative to the car buffer striking plate and counterweight buffer. The channel must be grouted or fixed to avoid movement under impact loads. In hydraulic elevator pits, additional channels may be provided for the cylinder guide and pump unit anchoring.
