The overspeed governor test measures the actual tripping speed of the governor by accelerating the governor sheave to the trip point using a calibrated tachometer and verifying the trip occurs within the range specified by EN 81-20 (typically 115–125% of rated speed for car governors). The test is performed at acceptance and at defined periodic intervals (typically every 3–5 years or after governor servicing). A separate test verifies that the governor rope pull force is sufficient to actuate the safety gear. Results are recorded with tachometer calibration certificates in the installation file.
