The motor overload relay monitors the hoist motor current and trips the motor circuit when current exceeds the rated value for a prolonged period, protecting the motor from thermal damage. In elevator applications, overload relays must be set carefully to allow the high starting currents of AC motors while still protecting against sustained overloads. Modern electronic overload relays offer phase loss protection, phase imbalance detection, thermistor input, and can be integrated with the drive controller. Manual or automatic reset options are available.
