Elevator Laser Alignment: Precision Hoistway Layout with Laser Tools

Glossary › Elevator Laser Alignment

The use of laser instruments to achieve precise alignment of guide rails, sills, and other elevator components during installation.

Full Definition
Elevator laser alignment uses rotating laser levels, laser plumb bobs, or total station theodolites to project reference planes and points within the hoistway, enabling installers to position guide rails, sill brackets, and machine bedplates to tolerances of ±0.5 mm. Traditional plumb wire methods are prone to draughts and vibration errors; laser tools are faster and more accurate, especially in tall buildings. A rotating laser at the pit generates a horizontal plane; a laser plumb transfers vertical reference lines to each floor. Digital inclinometers and laser distance meters supplement optical tools. The use of laser alignment is recognised in EN 81 installation standards and manufacturers' installation manuals as best practice, reducing post-installation adjustments, guide shoe wear, and door misalignment. Documentation of alignment measurements is best practice.
