EN 17206 is the harmonised European standard for service lifts (dumbwaiters)—small lifts designed to transport goods but not persons, where the car is not accessible while moving and has limited internal dimensions (typically height ≤1.2 m, floor area ≤1.0 m²). Previously covered by EN 81-3, EN 17206 was published in 2021 as a standalone standard. It specifies structural, mechanical, electrical, and safety requirements including car guides, landing doors, safety devices, and maintenance access. Products manufactured to EN 17206 are CE-marked under the Lifts Directive or Machinery Directive depending on their rated speed and whether they can carry persons.
