EN 115-1:2017+A1:2020 (Safety rules for the construction and installation of escalators and moving walks — Part 1: Construction and installation) is the primary standard governing escalators and moving walks in Europe, harmonised under the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. Key scope: (1) Design — inclination up to 30° for escalators and 12° for moving walks; step widths 0.58 m, 0.82 m, 1.00 m; rated speed max 0.75 m/s (≤30°) or 0.50 m/s (>30°); rated capacity based on step width and speed; (2) Mechanical — step and pallet construction, comb plate geometry (≤4 mm gap), step chain tensile strength, balustrade height ≥0.85 m; (3) Safety devices — comprehensive mandatory list including step-missing sensor, chain break, comb impact, overspeed (+20%), underspeed, anti-reversal, skirt obstruction, handrail entry guard, emergency stops; (4) Electrical — safety circuit, control station, emergency lighting, emergency communication; (5) Structural — truss design loads, anchorage forces, seismic provisions; (6) Access — machine space requirements, maintenance access.
