An electromagnetic compatibility filter fitted to the elevator drive or controller to suppress conducted and radiated interference.
Full Definition
An elevator EMC filter is a passive network — typically comprising common-mode chokes, differential-mode inductors, and X/Y capacitors — installed at the input of the variable frequency drive (VFD) or controller to attenuate high-frequency switching noise generated by the inverter. Without EMC filtering, conducted interference on the supply mains can disrupt building management systems, fire alarms, and adjacent equipment. EN 12015 and EN 12016 define emission and immunity requirements for elevator electrical equipment. Filter selection is based on the drive's leakage current, cable length to the motor, and the installation's EMC environment category (C1, C2, C3). Improper earthing of the filter housing nullifies its effectiveness; low-impedance bonding to the PE rail is mandatory.
