The earth leakage circuit breaker (ELCB), also known as residual current device (RCD) or ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI), monitors the current balance between live and neutral conductors. When leakage current to earth exceeds typically 30 mA (personal protection) or 300 mA (fire protection), it trips within milliseconds to disconnect the supply. EN 81-20 requires isolation and protection of the elevator electrical installation; ELCBs are installed at the main supply and on circuits serving the machine room, pit, and car top. They provide critical protection for maintenance personnel working in wet or confined conditions. Monthly testing by pressing the test button is required; annual professional testing must be documented.
