The test simulates an obstruction in the door path — typically using the standardised test cylinder specified in EN 81-20 — and verifies that the door reverses within the permitted force and distance limits. Closing force is also measured with a calibrated force gauge to confirm it does not exceed the maximum permitted value (typically 150 N average and 300 N peak for EN 81-20 installations). Failed tests indicate a faulty safety edge, misaligned light curtain, or incorrectly calibrated door controller and must be corrected before the elevator is returned to service.
