The door cam is an eccentrically-shaped disk or lever in the door operator mechanism whose profile determines the velocity profile of the door panel throughout its travel — slow at the start and end of stroke to reduce impact, fast in mid-travel to minimise dwell time. In some older mechanical door operators, the cam directly drives the door panel via a link; in modern electronic operators, a similar velocity profile is programmed into the motor controller. Cam wear or incorrect profile causes rough door motion and excessive noise.
