The divider beam (also called separating beam or pit beam) is a structural element within the hoistway that physically separates the car travel zone from the counterweight travel zone, preventing collision. It also serves as a mounting point for guide rail brackets and, in pit installations, for buffer support frames. Divider beams are designed to withstand the forces generated by buffer impact, safety gear actuation, and guide rail loads. They are typically fabricated from hot-rolled steel sections and embedded or bolted into the hoistway structure during construction.
