A diverter pulley (also called a deflector sheave or redirect sheave) redirects the suspension ropes from the traction sheave to the top of the car frame or counterweight, allowing the machine room or machine to be positioned away from the direct line of rope travel. It is used in roping configurations where a direct 1:1 overhead arrangement is not possible. The pulley must be sized for the rope diameter and must rotate freely on its shaft with adequate lubrication. Groove profile must match the rope type to avoid excessive wear. Rope contact angle around the pulley affects rope fatigue life.
