EN 81-20 requires a counterweight screen (guard) when the counterweight travels adjacent to accessible areas such as the pit or adjacent floor levels. The screen is typically a steel mesh or solid panel fixed to the pit structure, extending from pit floor to at least 2.5 m above the lowest landing. It protects maintenance personnel in the pit from being struck by the moving counterweight and prevents objects from falling onto the counterweight path. Screen dimensions and fixing requirements are specified in EN 81-20 Clause 5.5.
