Counterweight guide rails are structural steel sections—typically T-profile—fixed to the hoistway walls and used to constrain the lateral movement of the counterweight assembly during normal operation and under safety gear or buffer engagement. They must be aligned precisely and joined with fishplates to ensure a smooth running surface. Rail bracket spacing, section size, and guide rail deflection under load are calculated to comply with EN 81-20 and ISO standards. They also act as reaction surfaces for the counterweight safety gear if fitted. Periodic lubrication and alignment checks are part of the maintenance schedule.
