An energy-absorbing device in the pit positioned under the counterweight travel path to limit overrun impact forces.
Full Definition
Counterweight buffers function identically to car buffers but are installed beneath the counterweight, typically on the opposite side of the pit. They must be rated for the counterweight mass (car tare + 40–50 % rated load) travelling at full speed. EN 81-20 §5.8 requires that when the car is at the highest landing, the counterweight must have a clearance above its buffer. Oil-type counterweight buffers are mandatory when rated speed exceeds 1.0 m/s. Inspection intervals and acceptance criteria mirror those for car buffers.
