Elevator cabin air purifiers gained widespread adoption following the COVID-19 pandemic and are now specified by hospitals, hotels, and high-occupancy residential buildings. Technologies include HEPA filtration (≥99.97% efficiency at 0.3 μm), activated-carbon adsorption, photocatalytic oxidation (PCO/TiO₂ + UV-A), bipolar ionisation, and plasma sterilisation. Units are typically integrated into the ceiling void or fan housing; airflow must be sufficient to achieve ≥3 air changes per hour (ACH) in the cabin volume. Ozone-generating technologies must comply with WHO guideline of ≤100 μg/m³ ozone concentration; ionisers must be tested per IEC 60335-2-65. Power supply is 24 V DC or 230 V AC from the car lighting circuit. Maintenance involves periodic HEPA filter replacement (6–12 months) and UV lamp replacement (8,000–12,000 hours). Effectiveness claims should be supported by independent test reports to ISO 18184 or equivalent.
