A safety device that detects the failure or breakage of one or more suspension ropes and prevents elevator operation.

A broken rope detector monitors the tension or presence of each suspension rope or belt and triggers the machine brake or safety circuit if any rope becomes slack or breaks. In hydraulic lifts, an equivalent device monitors the hydraulic hose. Rope break detection is mandatory in EN 81-20 for certain roping arrangements and is always required for roped hydraulic lifts. The detector typically uses mechanical limit switches or load cells positioned at the rope terminations or on the rope compensation bar. Activation must arrest the car immediately and prevent restart until a competent engineer has inspected and reset the system.
