Elevator battery chargers are dedicated float or trickle chargers that maintain sealed lead-acid or lithium batteries at full charge readiness for use during mains power failure. They power emergency lighting, the automatic rescue device (ARD), the two-way communication system, and the pit and car roof inspection sockets. The charger monitors battery voltage, temperature, and state of health, typically reporting faults to the building management system. Overcharge protection and deep-discharge protection extend battery life. Battery charger condition is tested monthly by simulating a mains failure (disconnecting the supply) and observing emergency system performance. Battery replacement intervals are specified by the battery manufacturer based on design life and operating temperature.
