Automatic elevator doors consist of a car door (driven by an electric door operator motor) and landing doors (passive panels mechanically coupled to the car door via a vane-and-roller coupler when the car is at the landing). Door types include single-speed, two-speed, and centre-opening configurations. The door operator drive is typically a DC brushless or AC motor controlled by a dedicated door controller with position feedback from encoder or optical sensor. EN 81-20 Section 5.3 specifies maximum closing force (150 N), kinetic energy limits (10 J), and re-opening device requirements. Safety curtains (light curtains) or 3D sensors detect obstruction during closing and trigger immediate reopening. Door open/close times are adjustable in software; typical cycle time is 2–4 seconds. Motor-operated door operators from manufacturers such as Wittur, Fermator, and Selcom are the dominant supply category.
